Under mount Spare Tire Holder
Hi everyone, I am a new 24 RK Cougar owner and don't like the rear tire holder clamped to the rather week rear bumper.
Does Keystone have a model trailer that has a under mounted spare tire holder that I could copy and install or is this a bad idea?

Facing the same dilemma (and wanting to mount a receiver hitch at the rear of the trailer!), local Keystone dealer was able to order a mount (from Keystone) to hold my tire up under the trailer. As I recall, could have mounted in front or behind axles. I opted for up front, behind the landing gear to somewhat balance the weight I was adding with the receiver hitch. Spare tire mount was $305 installed, money well spent.
I haven't mastered attaching photos, if you'd like, you are welcome to PM me and send an e-mail address, I'm happy to shoot you pictures by that route.

There is also this if you want to do it yourself. http://norcoind.com/bal/products/con...-a-spare.shtml
From what I have seen it is around $80 but only a few people carry it as it is a new product.

My Raptor has the spare tucked under the trailer. You lower it like a pick up truck using the stab jack tool. I think most of the toy haulers do.

I've been looking as well and have see where people bolt there tires under the tongue, but I've not been able to find the mounting kit for this. Anyone know of one, or are they all home made?

LCI (Lippert) built the frame and Lippert sells under-chassis tire mounts, storage drawers and a combination of both. You can find what's available here: http://store.lci1.com/spare-tire-rac...ivers-c76.aspx
Some members with welding skills (or access to a good welder) have installed "crank down pickup truck spare tire carriers" under their RV. That takes some fabricating and at least some experience in welding and metal work. The Lippert components are pretty much "bolt on and go" systems.

I've been wanted to do this also but been having a hard time getting my welding buddy over the house. I'm all over this Bal Hind A Spare.
Does anyone know if we have I-Bean frames??? I've never really took notice before.
Jerry
ps Now that I think about it I do believe its I-Beam. Can anyone confirm this please.

Yes I beam frame. The mounting plate on the BAL is flat so you would have too add some spacers to fill the "I" beam and bolt through it. It comes with no hardware except 2 bolts to hold the tire to the bracket, mine did not even ship with directions not that what they provide is really of any use. I found the directions online I believe the part no. for mine was 28216.
Here is the link where I purchased it drop ships from the manufactuerer about 2 weeks, instructions found here too.

Thanks for the info Bill. 2+ weeks shipping. It wouldn't make it to me in time for my next trip up to Bodega Bay. I guess I'll install it when I get back.

Just a note on the pickup/cable type- this week end I'll be lowering mine to lube it.
I just had one on my company truck frozen- and had to be towed even though I had a new spare. That truck was 5 years old and I never dropped the spare.
I also decided I'm going to practice changing a tire- may not take it off but want to see how I'm going to jack up the trailer (they do not come with a jack) and loosen the lug nuts (they do not come with a lug wrench). I'm not sure if my truck is the same size or not.

dave-g, Howdy;
I'd suggest, at minimum, a 6 ton hyd. jack, and some 2X8 boards
to give a wider footprint for the jack, a 1/2" breaker bar
and an appropriate 6 sided socket. I prefer 6 sided sockets
because they have more contact surface to the nut, A 1/2"
torque wrench to snug'em up to the proper torque.

Here's what I did. Hope the link works.
Mounted mine under the front of the trailer. As you can see I used a SUV spare tire mount that mounts under the vehicle (got mine at a wrecking yard for 20 bucks)To remove it I just crank it down. I modified it so I can attach my 18v drill to the crank with an extension. The poles I used are what they use for stop signs etc. got this idea from another forum. See pics.

I put in my order for the Bal Hide a spare and its backordered. I got an e-mail today saying they expect shipping to be on 9-17-13. This is ok with me. I knew I wouldn't get it before my next trip. I'll take pics of the install and give a review after its installed.

Spare tire carrier
I just joined this forum in order to reply to this thread. I have had the misfortune of changing tires 5 times at the side of the road. 3 times with my old Hitchhicker II that had a rear bumper mounted spare and twice now with my Monty 5er with the pickup truck style winch down spare. You do not want a winch down style. You have to crawl under the trailer to drag the spare out from underneath and drag it back again to put the blown tire back. The last time was on a muddy shoulder and I just tossed the bad tire in the bed of the truck as the winch jammed on the way down. I was going to go back to the bumper style when I saw the BAL hide-a-spare. Looks like the way to go.

I received my Hide a Spare a few weeks ago but haven't had the time to install it. I hoping to get it done this weekend. Pics to follow.
