Towing with 2022 Ram 3500 diesel

Who is pulling their 5ers with a 2022 Ram 3500 Laramie, crew cab, longbed, dually, diesel? Looking to purchase one and looking for the good and bads. Currently towing a Cougar 337 FLS with 12,300 gvw.

The Ram...GM and Ford one ton dually's with diesel engines are hard to beat for towing 5th wheels. Cummins 6.7's are a great engine and the exhaust braking is a big help slowing these campers down. I towed with a F350 Ford for 4-1/2 yrs until hurricane Ida flipped our 17K pound 5th wheel and totaled it. The long wheelbase versions like I had ride smooth when towing and the usually larger fuel tanks make for less stopping. Most of our camping group have Ram diesels and really like them. 12,300 on the camper would be just tickling the springs on a 3500 dually!! Good luck with your decision.

First I'll mention The Fast Lane Truck" on YouTube. When I was looking I got the most value out of their Ike challenge pros and cons after maxing these trucks in the mountains.

We run a 2020 Ram 3500 dually super cab short box night addition. We bought used with 50 k miles and have about 65k now. The truck is just a dream even just driving around town. We are towing a 19k gvw trailer which is actually 17 k most of the time. You really wouldn't know it was even back there and the truck really doesn't come alive until you put it to work. Anyway feel free to shoot questions.

Just like there is a reason you want a long box there are a few other choices to actively be aware of. You will want to do some research on the transmission choice. I've heard Aisin is the way to go. We have the 65rfe with 4:10 rear which bumps it to 22500 max tow. There is obviously the HO engine available also and word of mouth is good. That said I've never been short of power. The one that worries me most quite frankly is the def system malfunction which then gives you something like 50 miles to repair then engages limp mode until it's fixed. I've never had it happen but I've heard stories. I don't think it's just a ram issue but rather a regulatory issue now.

We run the pullright 24 k sliding puck 5th wheel hitch to keep the trailer away from the truck when turning. Must have for short beds. We also installed a 46 gal reserve tank that fits under the bed cover. Not much room left in the bed with all of that but it's worked really well for us. The leveling airbags are really nice if you do a lot of towing. Aftermarket bags have much more functionality than the stock airbags. We run stock and haven't had any issues.

You likely won’t notice a huge difference in towing power, but the 3500 DRW will feel a lot more solid with the 5er in tow. We went from a 2001 Ram 5.9 CTD with 3.55’s and a 5 speed manual, to the 2016 Ram 6.7 CDT 3.73’s and DRW the difference was awesome.

We have a 2018 Ram Laramie crew cab 4x4 long bed Aisin 3.73. Two things I don’t like are the small 32 gallon tank and the Torsen rear differential. The 50 gallon tank option wasnt available when we bought. (I don’t think). The Torsen rear end…baffles me why Ram did this. After a couple hours of interstate towing, stopping for fuel, then taking off the rear end will jump sideways and you will think youve done bent the driveshaft. I talked to my dealer about it and he said it’s normal. Owners manual says no additive in the differential, dealer says yes.
I run Rotella T6 15-40with a Fleetguard filter, and no oil consumption. The Aisin requires a fluid drain at 30,000 and a pan drop at 60,000. A drain plug and exterior spin on filter would be nice.

Our 2016 Aisin has a drain plug, and not all that difficult to drop the pan to change the filter. We just passed 90K and second fluid drain and fill. The pan drop and filter change was made easier by loosing the transmission rear mounting bolts and lifting the trans about 1".

I have a 2020 laramie dually with the HO engine ,4:10 rear and aisin trans…it tows like a dream…i have the factory airbags,50 gallon tank and adaptive cruise control as well as a bunch of other options.
The 50 gallon tank is a game changer for the distances we travel per day..the adaptive cruise is nice while towing as it monitors the vehicle ahead of you and will brake if god forbid you glanced away for a second.

The air suspension is nice but i’m used to putting a one inch leveling kit for a better looking stance on the front of these trucks and you can’t do that with factory air ride

If you decide to buy used then make sure if it’s 2019-20 that the bosch cp4 injection pump recall was already performed…Ram reacalled all trucks with these problematic pumps on them and you want to make sure it was done.

all in all they are nice trucks but i don’t drive mine for hardly anything other then towing the fifth wheel…think i only have around 18k on mine in 2.5 years

I’ve had shortbed 4x4 trucks for my last few trucks and i just find them more enjoyable to live with on a daily basis.
When we travel the dually is a pain to find parking unless you are the type of person that doesn’t mind a few door dings if they happen….( i’m not a door ding is ok kinda person so i park far far away and walk 1/4 mile to get back in town kinda person)… the extended rear fenders alone are huge…it’s like two extra hoods jutting out of each side..lots of places for little scratches if your not careful with loading truck

The little towns we like to frequent on the east coast aren’t really dually friendly for parking..And key West i had to scout ahead a day prior for a good parking spot….Also the truck won’t fit into any of my garages

I should have bought the short bed extended cab version as i think that’s a little better for me and a little sportier…it’s the difference between board shorts and flip flops or wrangler jeans and work boots at the beach to me

And i’ve had all kinds of trucks and had a very large dually box truck for years so i’m not intimidated at all with driving a long truck but i just don’t find them fun to drive…it’s like a giant land yacht and the turning radius is an entire county wide

Bought the fifth wheel first and found my truck was overweight (surprise)…then got the dually…If i had to do it again i’d put all the money for dually and fifth wheel into a nice used diesel pusher (pre def)…and pull a jeep behind it

The short bed ram or ford 4x4 trucks are sporty but the ram 8’ bed dually crew cab just feels like i’m driving a piece of construction equipment down the road
when i’m not pulling a trailer

Now if we are talking FORD F450…well that’s another story altogether…they have the right stance ..the right wheels and tires ..a much tighter turning radius and even though the overall length and width is about the same…They just have better proportions and look like they are equally at home towing large trailers or rolling down A1A in the Keys with Jimmy Buffet playing loud and the windows open…may end up with one …one of these days ..when the dealer markup isn’t in play

Just my opinion

Love the truck. Wouldn’t trade it for any. I will say it turns like a truck. BIG radius!!
